GO STEPHANIE!!!!!!! The prospect of something being bad because it's not mass produced always struck me as a marketing effort by the mass manufacturers. ESPECIALLY as the grandmother who taught my mother (and then my mother taught me) how to sew was a garment factory worker. They -- that is, the retail garment industry -- don't want it to get out just how easy it is to discover and create your own style.

In the O' Brien book "The far side of the world" the action takes place in the War of 1812 with the USS Norfork the opponent. This story was inspired in part by the capture of the USS Essex (Captain Porter) by HMS Phoebe (Captain Hillyar) off Valparaiso Chile. Like Acheron, Essex had been preying on British whalers in the vicinity of the Galapagos.

The hardest rank to achieve was really lieutenant. Post Captain was mostly a matter of seniority. Now patronage did help with the size and prestige of your captaincy. But there were a lot of ships big and small and they all needed a captain. If you made lieutenant, eventually if you survived and didn't others disgrace yourself you'd almost certainly get a ship, even if it was a lightly armed tender or sloop.

Just a couple of observations. You mentioned British captains, but I think it would have been good to go into specifically frigate captains, who were generally the best or at least most aggressive of the British captains. The other thing is I agree with you...I don't know how realistic it would be for the French to hide, or whatever they were doing, while letting the British on board. Or how realistic it would be for the British to come on board and be surprised by the French trap. It was the one discontinuity, for me, in what was the best era naval movie every made, IMHO. This was a great movie, and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Napoleonic-era naval movies.
